Saranac Lake, NY – The Adirondack Community Trust (ACT) announces that Alexis Smith is the 2010 recipient of the Sean P. McCullough Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The annual scholarship recipient mustbe a graduating senior from any high school within Section VII of New York State, a member of the spring track team and nominated by the school Track Team coach. Successful recipients possess a dedication to the sport and team regardless of theirsuccess; embody school spirit and show strong team and academic leadership.
Alexis Smith, a 2010 graduate of Saranac Lake High School, was nominated for the McCullough Scholarship by her Varsity Track Coach, Mr.Peter Frenette. Mr. Frenette writes, "Alexis came to practice every day giving 110%. She was a good leader on and off the field. Alexis and the track team were mutual beneficiaries of each other, as good as Alexis was for the team I think the team was as good for Alexis. I would not be surprised to see Alexis back here coaching someday."
Alexis is attending The College of St. Rose this fall. As well as her athletic abilities, Alexis also excelled academically, was a member of the SLCS Honor Society and graduated 16th in her class.
The McCullough family established the scholarship with ACT in honor of their son, Sean McCullough, who died tragically May 14, 2005. Sean was a gifted student, talented leader and dedicated athlete. He was a great competitor both on the field and in the classroom.
A former Plattsburgh High School Track coach, Mark Donnelly remarked that "This scholarship is an opportunity for the area track coaches to recognize young people who contribute significantly to their team. These contributions often go unnoticed by the press, but are significant in the building of the team. Dedication, thoughtfulness, support, and caring were some of Sean's strongest qualities and are the foundation for team building and this scholarship."
The Sean P. McCullough Memorial Scholarship Fund is administered and managed by the Adirondack Community Trust, the community foundation serving the people of the Adirondack region. ACT encourages nominations to the fund by working with the section track coaches. The ACT Grants Committee reviews all nominations and selects the annual recipient. The Fund will distribute up to 5% annually, $1,000 in 2010, allowing the fund to grow and generate income in perpetuity.
"The Sean P.McCullough Memorial Scholarship is just one example of how ACT can help honor donor's wishes to make a difference in a young person's life, while at the same time memorializing a loved one." stated Cali Brooks, Executive Director. Contributions to the Sean P. McCullough Memorial Scholarship Fund are encouraged and accepted on an ongoing basis.
